Dry Macular Degeneration

Have you been out in the sun?

Do straight lines seem crooked?

Dry Macular Degeneration

If you answered “Yes,” you may have Dry Macular Degeneration

Prevention and early detection are crucial to your vision

The macula is the center of vision inside the eye. At birth the macula has a certain thickness. With time it becomes thinner causing blurred vision and even straight lines to appear crooked. You can slow down the thinning by using sunglasses, not smoking, and taking antioxidant vitamins. The disease can also be genetic.

At some point the retina becomes so thin that abnormal vessels are formed. When this happens, the disease is called Wet Macular Degeneration. There are specific medications to treat these vessels. Once the abnormal vessels are controlled we continue monitoring the Dry Macular Degeneration throughout your life with the most advanced equipment. At some point these vessels may appear and they should be treated as soon as possible to preserve vision. In addition we can determine if the thinning process is active to recommend that you take additional precautions.

Detect damage early

When we shine a blue light on the retina and then take a special picture, the normal retina has a gray color, the damaged retina looks black, and the retina at risk for damage has a white hue (see arrow).

Color Photography

The normal retina has a reddish color. The retina that is thin and atrophic has a yellowish color (see arrow).
