Eye Exams Q & A

What are eye exams?

Eye exams are comprehensive evaluations of your eyes. The exam includes various tests that assess your vision and evaluate the structures of your eye for health and function.

Your eye exam provides you with the education you need to maintain good eye health, finds eye diseases during their earliest and most treatable stages, and ensures you get the right eyewear prescription for the clearest possible vision.

Who needs an eye exam?

Everyone benefits from an eye exam. The frequency of your eye exams may depend on your age, vision needs, and recommendations from the team at Beraja Medical Institute.

In general, children should have an eye exam before they start school and then every 1-2 years.

Eye exams for adults vary based on age. During your 20s and 30s, you may only need an eye exam every five years if you don’t have any special vision needs. Once you reach age 40, your risk of developing eye diseases increases, and you need more frequent eye exams, ranging from every 1-5 years.

If you wear glasses, no matter your age, you may require more frequent eye exams.

What happens during eye exams?

The specifics of your eye exam may depend on your age, vision needs, and medical history. The team at Beraja Medical Institute tailors your exam to ensure you get the most comprehensive care.

During your eye exam, your doctor reviews your medical history and asks about your vision changes, if any. Then, your doctor tests your vision to determine if you need glasses or a change in your current prescription.

Eye drops are placed in your eyes to dilate your pupils to help your provider evaluate your eye health. They then perform a retinal exam and evaluates the structures within your eye using special magnifying tools.

Your eye exam may also include special tests to screen for glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

After your eye exam, your doctor reviews the results of your exam and makes recommendations based on your vision and eye health needs. Because of the dilation of your pupils, the team at Beraja Medical Institute recommends you arrange for someone to drive you home after your eye exam.
